Not every plant is safe for your cats. Here are some tips to help you make sure your cats and your houseplants are simpatico.
- Use cayenne pepper or pointy stones around the plants that are attractive to your cats. If you absolutely have to have that basil, but you know she loves digging in the dirt, sprinkle some cayenne pepper around the base of it, and use sharp small shells or stones to deter her from digging.
- Make sure your pots are non-breakable. If something should happen while you’re away, you want to make sure that she’s not injured or cut while she’s alone. As frustrating as it is, a plant can be replaced, and the plant is much cheaper than the vet bill should she get injured.
- Try putting wire around the base of pots. Some people have found this to be effective, however unsightly. But if your plant is tall and the base is hidden behind a living room chair, putting wire around the base of the pot will keep her away and not detract from the decor.
- Give her something she CAN enjoy! Lemon balm is a favorite of cats, and putting it in a place by a warm sunny window can entice her to make that her favorite spot in your whole home!
- Avoid plants that are toxic to cats if possible. Here are some of the plants that should NOT be in your home with your cat:
- Aloe vera
- Begonia
- English ivy
- Dumbcane
- Jade plant
- Lilies
- Chrysanthemum
- Coleus
- Pothos
- Pointsettia
- Tomato
If you absolutely must have these in your home, patio or yard, make sure they are placed in areas inaccessible to your cat, and double check with her vet for what signs you should be aware of should she get into one of these plants.
